The Kee Bird was a United States Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress bomber that crash-landed in Greenland on February 21, 1947. The aircraft was on a secret reconnaissance mission when it encountered severe weather conditions and had to make an emergency landing on the ice sheet.
The crew of the Kee Bird survived the crash and were eventually rescued by a US Air Force rescue team after spending several days in the harsh Arctic conditions. The aircraft, however, was left abandoned on the ice sheet due to the remote location and difficult conditions for recovery.
In 1994, a team of aviation enthusiasts attempted to recover the Kee Bird and restore it to flying condition. However, during the restoration efforts, a fire broke out and destroyed the aircraft, effectively ending any chance of it being salvaged.
The Kee Bird remains a significant piece of aviation history and serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by aircrews during military operations in extreme environments.
